I’m sure you know what pixels are. Most of us, in this age of technology do. But in case you don’t, they are tiny dots of light that make up the screens of life—from TVs to cell phones. Pixels are nearly invisible, but they change us. Often subliminally.
In FLICKERING PIXELS, Mr. Hipps reiterates several concepts that he brought out in more detail in his prior book, The Hidden Power of Electronic Culture: How Media Shapes Faith, the Gospel, and Church (Zondervan, 2006). He shows us some insights about media and how their technology shapes some of the basic issues of our faith and life.
In Mr. Hipps previous job (before seminary and taking a pastorate) he used to work as a kind of “consumer anthropologist.” To explain, that means th at he hijacked your imagination, branded your brain with a logo, and then fed you opinions that you thought were your own. Sound familiar? Isn’t that what every commercial, news program, etc is trying to do?
FLICKERING PIXELS explores the hidden power of media and technology as a way to understand who we are, who we think God is, and how God’s unchanging messages has changed, is changing and will change. (confusing, huh?) FLICKERING PIXELS will show us how God communicates with us and the way we communicate God. It’s about training our eyes to see things we usually over look.
FLICKERING PIXELS didn’t really teach me anything new—I’ve known for a long time that the world is changing based on what we are fed through media. But it did shed additional light on some items. The author did say in the author’s notes, that the subject matter is explored more deeply in his previous book (mentioned above) written for pastors and church leaders, and that this book is more for the average layman.
