I was an educator(librarian) who retired by choice, but there are still times, five years later, when I feel my identity as that person who loved being a librarian slipping away. Before I retired our district faced some huge budget cuts and at one point it seemed that that elementary music and art might be the next cuts. I worried about retiring, fearing that the district might see library media specialist as a job to eliminate after I was gone. Thankfully none of that happened. My husband had retired before me (although he had a second part time career). Despite a solid marriage, we are very different people, and I could connect so many times to Lucy's silent thoughts. I may feel differently when I finish the book, but right now I almost feel SONGS OF SILENCE is part marriage manual and part self-help, all built on a story that feels so close and true. I respect your take on the story, and like to find that there are always different opinions on books. I find sometimes I am the one who is slightly bored and less than enthralled with a book, and others happily sing its praises. Glad we are all unique, even as readers.
