Julie Arduini Author Interview

1.       Can you give us a little background about you?

Absolutely! I love to write Christian romance that features surrender issues and chocolate. I’m married and we have two children. I’m also a step-mom and grandmother.

2.       How did you get your start writing?

I was the little girl scribbling on scrap paper before I could read. Then I was the high-schooler writing stories and passing them around the school bus. My difficulty was I was not strong in grammar skills and I had teachers who did not encourage me to pursue writing. I spent my young adult years working for a not-for-profit, and then as a stay-at-home mom, I used my skills for MOPS, Mothers of Preschoolers publicity. It was only when I turned 35 did I realize it was time to surrender the fear and write. I promised God I would write whatever He wanted, when He wanted.

3.       What surrender issues have you written about?

In Surrendering Time, Entrusted was about surrendering the present. Jenna and Ben were struggling with belonging, change, and grief. Entangled was about surrendering past regret. Engaged was about surrendering future plans for God’s will. Match Made in Heaven was surrendering fear, and Restoring Christmas was about pain and grief. Surrendering Stinkin’ Thinkin’ that I wrote with my daughter Hannah featured You’re Beautiful, You’re Amazing, and You’re Brilliant, books for tween girls/teens/ and women.

4.       So, what’s Surrendering Hearts about?

It’s a six-book series featuring the Hart sextuplets. Each sextuplet gets their own book. The premise is what if a family shares a unique birth story but stays in the national spotlight because of tragedy? Anchored Hearts is the first book featuring the oldest, Jordyn Bell Hart.

5.       Tell the readers about Anchored Hearts.

Anchored Hearts
features Hart sextuplet #1, Jordyn. She’s used to taking care of everything and everyone, but times are changing. Her dad has recently married their neighbor, Shelly, and Jordyn isn’t used to the idea. Her siblings are moving on and not keeping Jordyn in the loop. Then there’s her work at WFRN. She’s the new morning show co-host who falls for her colleague, Spencer Collins. However, she’s made a vow stemming from her childhood that could ruin everything. Spencer has issues of his own. The morning show job wasn’t part of his plan, and he’s constantly tuned into his home life. The both of them need to let go of their control issues. Question is----can they??

6.       What gave you the inspiration to write this new series?

I am a fan of the TV show, This is Us, and I was in awe of the ability to write a show involving multiples and how an event changed everything for everyone for decades. I wondered if I could write about a big family given the logistics. My sister pitched writing about donor families, but I’m not ready to tackle that. I went with sextuplets and thought what would happen if a family with a unique birth story stayed in the national spotlight because of tragedy?

7.       What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

This year I’m especially busy as our daughter graduates from high school, and our son is getting married. Other than that, I love to read and watch crime shows like Cold Justice. I also binge shows with Hannah like The Office and New Girl. I also have a passion to mentor teens and women, and am active helping out at youth group.

8.       What, if anything, surprises you about writing?

How God takes me through the surrender theme before or as I’m writing about it. I never realized how much control was a problem in my life until Anchored Hearts. In fact, I lost a year of writing because my mom became ill and then passed away. That grief and how I handled it led to anxiety. When I sought counsel, I realized a lot of it was grief and my wish to be in control.

9.       What’s next for you?

Surrendering Hearts is six books, so up next is Hart sextuplet #2, Ryan. His story is Repairing Hearts, and I’m SO excited about it.

10.   Do you have any advice for anyone considering writing?

If you feel called to write, don’t let fear stop you. God will equip you. Just be obedient. I’m a big advocate for critique groups. They have challenged and improved my writing. I also created a prayer team before I wrote a word. They are active to this day. I believe any readers or success I have in the field is because prayer covers everything I do.

A good interview on how God grows a writer who wasn't encouraged by a teacher. Like Julie, many writers are self-motivated and willing to answer God's call. You go, girl.
