A Clever Disguise

Title: A CLEVER DISGUISE
Author: Kathleen Fuller
Publisher: Avalon Books
December 2008
ISBN: 978-0-8034-8827-0
Genre: historical/regency

Michael Balcarris has loved Miss Emily Dymoke for years. But as a spy, he feels that he is not able to profess his love for her. Instead, he is forced to act the part of a bored fop, concealing his real feelings.

Emily had a crush on Michael as a young girl, but as a young woman she finds him most hateful. When the love of her life rejects her, Emily is crushed and vows never to marry anyone, most certainly not Michael.

However, when another young man starts to pay attention to Emily, Emily is torn. Why is she not attracted to the handsome stranger in town—and is attracted to hateful Michael? When the family retires to the country for a spell, Emily’s feelings become even more confused. Can she possibly love a man she can’t tolerate?

A CLEVER DISGUISE is a sweet romance, not inspirational, per se, but nothing objectionable or shocking in the story. I enjoyed getting to know Michael, and seeing why he acted the way he did among the ton of London, but also getting to know Emily, and to see her growing attraction for her old family friend.

The story is quick to read, and held my attention all the way through. I enjoyed reading it, and a regency is not a genre I’ve seen a lot of recently, so it was a nice change of pace. Make sure you pick up a copy of A CLEVER DISGUISE for yourself. Available by calling 1-800-223-5251, at www.amazon.com, or at your favorite bookseller. 198 pages. $23.95, hardcover.
