MELONY TEAGUE – talks about A PROMISE TO KEEP #recipe #excerpt

Have you ever attended a high school reunion? I’ve wondered what it would be like to attend my own reunion. (I’m not confessing to how many years it has been.)

From the start of writing A Promise to Keep, I knew that two characters would be reunited at their high school reunion and it wouldn’t go as they’d planned. In Chapter two of A Promise to Keep, Savannah Sanderson and Michael McCann attend their dreaded 20-year high school reunion and one of the refreshments on offer is some ghastly punch. At first I had no idea how much the sickly sweet punch would show up in the first few chapters.

Here’s an excerpt from A Promise to Keep, Chapter 5:

Another awkward moment passed, and George cocked his head toward the food tables. “Let me get you more punch.”
“No, thanks. That stuff is…”
“Awful. Yeah, I know.”

Who wants horrible tasting punch at a party? Never, fear. I’ve got just the thing for you!

A punch recipe that won’t have you scrunching up your face. Although this recipe isn’t in the book, I have it on good authority that Michael approves, and Savannah makes it whenever her and her friends, Evelyn, Catherine and Lucy get together. These are the same friends who endeavor to coax Savannah out of her shell. Well, maybe ‘coax’ isn’t the right word, more like drag her out.

Michael says something to Savannah which resonates with many of us:

“The things in my life that bring regret are not so much things I did. More like things I didn’t do. Words I should have said. Moments I should have cherished. It’s funny, but in hindsight, I see them all clearly. It’s harder to recognize an opportunity you’re missing while you’re in it.”

A Promise to Keep is a story about friendships and second chances.

You may have to adjust the sweetness to taste depending on whether you prefer sparking water of soda.

I’ve included a downloadable and printable recipe card for you [link to PDF]

From Savannah and me, we hope you have a wonderful year ahead, celebrating all of the moments that make life so rich. I hope you are able to use the recipe when you gather with your friends to talk about memories you’ve made together.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Research librarian Savannah Sanderson wants nothing more than to escape into her happily-ever-after novels with their larger-than-life fictional heroes. But a promise to her late husband has her attending her dreaded twenty-year high school reunion, drinking ghastly punch, and taking desperate measures just to keep her vow, even if she has to hide behind the décor to do it.

Once a reckless troublemaker, Michael McCann fled town after graduation. Now a professional technical rescuer, he’s back for the reunion, but on his trip down memory lane, he soon comes face to face with unresolved issues, namely Savannah.

Before the night is over, a pact between these two old friends will lead them on an adventure into uncharted emotional territory where Michael must confront his past regrets and find the courage to reveal the truth. But can Savannah fly from her sheltered nest and risk her heart on a real-life hero?
