Not Just Good Hands By Heidi Dru Kortman

Text: John 10:27-30

“My sheep hear my voice; I know them and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand. I and the Father are one.”

            During the twentieth century, a nationally-known insurance company ran a series of television and printed ads that featured the image of a man’s cupped hands holding a company logo. The slogan that accompanied this image read, “You’re in good hands….” As expected, these ads evoked a sense of security and satisfaction. Clients of this company believed they made a good choice.

            As Christians, we are in even better hands than those people were—agents of an insurance company need information from their clients. Health concerns, employment, age, family size, and many other matters require discussion. Our God made us, and knows all these things about us.

            When people buy insurance, the size of the policy purchased determines the amount of coverage. Buyers are responsible for choosing enough coverage to meet their expected needs. Here also Christians have the advantage. Ephesians 3:20 describes our God as the one “who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us.”

            Insurance policies are attempts to provide financial security in the event of disaster. However, the company involved may choose not to give coverage based on conditions written within the policy. God’s care for us is not conditional. Eternal life, the thing we need most, is immediately available to us when we believe that God’s Son Jesus lived, died, and rose again to permanently free us from the sins we commit.

            There may well be times when our handicaps make us wonder whether our basic needs for food, shelter, and clothing will be met. Life can be complicated, but God promises that if we seek his kingdom, all these things will be given to us as well. Recall the times he has prepared special ways to give you just what you needed.

            Prayer:

            As we seek Your kingdom, Lord, we ask, for the sake of those who have little or no idea of Your intent, that Your kingdom becomes visible in our lives. Give each ordinary moment an impact on this imperfect world. You are our only source of true security In Jesus’ triumphant name, Amen
