Touching the Clouds

Title: TOUCHING THE CLOUDS
Author: Bonnie Leon
Publisher: Revell
July 2010
ISBN: 978-0-8007-3359-9
Genre: Historical

Kate Evans was engaged to marry her long time friend, Richard, but then the promise of jobs for bush pilots lures her to Alaska. There she finds that because she is a woman, she has a hard time finding a job as a pilot. Desperate to prove herself, Kate finally is hired to take a job as a mail carrier, flying mail to remote locations in Alaska once a week.

Kate knew her calling would be an uphill battle, but she feels compelled to prove herself, flying in conditions that more experienced male pilots shied away from. When Kate crosses paths with a mysterious man living in the wilderness, Kate is intrigued. But she is being courted by another pilot. Will Kate make the effort necessary to get to know the man homesteading alone?

TOUCHING THE CLOUDS is the first book in Ms. Leon’s Alaskan Skies series. Personally, I think this is the best book that I’ve read by Ms. Leon. I could relate to Kate and enjoyed getting to know her and the men she worked around, and interacted with. I am looking forward to reading more in this series.

Kate is a realistic heroine, out to prove herself in a man’s world, and exploring a land she had only dreamed of. I’ve always wanted to visit Alaska, and enjoyed doing it through the pages of this book. I enjoyed the touch of romance too. If you read one historical this year, make it TOUCHING THE CLOUDS. It flies high above the rest. $14.99. 362 pages.
