A Promise to Love

Title: A PROMISE TO LOVE
Author: Serena B. Miller
Publisher: Revell
October 2012
ISBN: 978-0-8007-2117-6
Genre: Historical romance

Ingrid Larsen arrives in Michigan with little more than the clothes on her back and a determination to find her brother, who has disappeared into the dangerous lumber camps. Destitute and barely hanging on to hope, the young Swedish immigrant takes a job as a servant to a cruel woman, and finally escapes to the home of kindly older window.

Joshua Hunter’s wife has mysteriously died, and everyone is blaming Josh for killing his wife. His deceased wife’s parents seek to take his five children from him, and the only way Josh and keep them is to marry.

Marriage would solve both of their problems, and Ingrid finds herself proposing in broken English to a man she barely knows. Many difficulties lie ahead--but the hardest battle of all will be winning the heart of her new husband.

A PROMISE TO LOVE is the second book I’ve read by Ms. Miller, but it won’t be the last. I love her books on Michigan’s history, as Michigan is my home state and I have raised and educated my children on the logging camps, freighters, cherry farms, maritime history, and more of the great state. It is great to read a historical romance set there. I think Ms. Miller is one of my favorite historical authors. I will definitely keep an eye out for her books.

Ingrid is a very strong character, independent and fiercely loyal, even when Josh is unkind. Josh doesn’t mean to be unkind, but he is broken and destroyed by his beloved wife’s death, and the vicious rumors that followed.

If you are looking for an absolutely fantastic historical romance, then you have to read A PROMISE TO LOVE. Highly recommended. $14.99. 332 pages.
