Interview with Alana Terry

. Tell us about “The Beloved Daughter”:

“The Beloved Daughter” is a Christian novel about a young girl living in contemporary North Korea. Chung-Cha’s father is an outspoken believer, whose faith leads to his family’s imprisonment. Chung-Cha is sent to North Korea’s notorious Camp 22 for political prisoners and their families. At Camp 22, Chung-Cha must decide if she will continue to hope God, who failed to protect her and her family from harm.
In April, “The Beloved Daughter” won second place in the Women of Faith writing competition.

· Is there one particular message or “moral of the story” you hope readers walk away with?

I think many of us have the misconception that Christians who face persecution in other countries are somehow holier than we are. I want to shatter the notion that only “super-saints” suffer for their faith. In writing “The Beloved Daughter,” I tried my best to show what happens when persecution comes knocking on the door of a young woman with bagged, doubts, fears, and sins that are a lot like yours and mine.

· Do you think there’s any reason in particular some people have one reaction versus the other when something bad happens in their life?

When Chung-Cha is sent to Camp 22, she all but abandons her faith. You and I might look down our noses at her – the daughter of a bold Christian leader – and wonder why she leaves the straight and narrow. But Chung-Cha spent her entire life listening to her dad promise that God would always protect her and provide for her. If you bear that in mind, it’s a little easier to understand Chung-Cha’s disillusionment with the Lord who let her family fall into the hands of the North Korean authorities.
