Why do you write the kind of books you do?

I can’t imagine writing anything else! As a Christian, I see the world through the eyes of someone who knows firsthand the grace and mercy of Christ, who sees the beautiful of God’s creation, who witnesses God’s presence in her life every day. To write anything else would feel dishonest to me.

How has being published changed your life?

Well, I’m constantly busy! BP—before publication, I had time to enjoy the process to writing, to really connect with my characters and pour over every word I wrote to make sure it was the best writing it could be. Now that I write on a deadline, I’ve had to speed up the process. If I’m not working on a contracted book, I’m doing publicity or writing a
novella or novel to self publish to fill in the gaps between my traditionally published books. I continue to take online writing classes to improve my craft and have started to teach workshops. Throw in my oldest daughter getting married next March and the usual family stuff, and. . .well, you get the picture.

What advice would you give a beginning author?

Before you sit down to write, take some time and talk to the Lord. Give your work over to Him; ask Him to guide you as you write. And never give up. You are a literature missionary—you can reach people others may not.

Where do you like to write?

It depends on the season! My favorite place to work is at a local park on large lake near our home. I usually pack a lunch, grab my pen/notebook and head for the lake. I’ve spent hundreds of hours there, writing out my stories longhand or dictate what I’ve written that day into my iPad mini. Of course, it’s too cold to go there during the winter so I have a small office I work out of the at home.

If someone else was sitting at your desk right now, what would they see?

My steering wheel! Now, if you were in my home office, you’d see this fantastic chair I just bought at a yard sale. You’d also see my organized ‘piles’—notebooks, files, Flip dictionary, anything I might use when I write.

When you’re working on a project, how do you keep the immensity of it from overwhelming you?

I pray—A LOT! I also spend time in my Bible every day. Being immersed in His word calms me. It reminds me that no matter how much (or how little) work I get done on any given day, God loves me; He’s always with me. Giving my words over to Him is the only way I can do what I do.

Tell us about New Hope Sweethearts

Here’s a little blurb:

She’s ready to take back her life . . .or what’s left of it. After ten lonely years of caring for her invalid grandfather, Kallie Huffman is ready to claim her life as her own. Taking a job in the laboratory of New Hope Community Hospital to pay the bills seems like a logic choice while she waits for her nursing license to be reinstated until she meets Lab Director Jefferson Muster. Kind and intelligent, the handsome doctor is everything Kallie has ever wanted in a man. But the prognosis hanging over her head rules out any possibility of a happily ever after for her.

He’s never needed anyone’s help. . .until now.

Patients are dying at New Hope Community Hospital without any reason, and Jeff needs help to discover the culprit before another family loses a loved one. As a young boy, his mother died of AIDS from a tainted blood transfusion and remembers the pain of being rejected by friends and family members. When help comes in the person of Kallie Huffman, the walls Jeff has carefully constructed around his heart start to crumble. But Kallie is hiding something that Jeff fears could break both of them.

Patty Smith-Hall is a multi-published, award-winning author with Love Inspired Historical/Heartsong and currently serves as president of the ACFW-Atlanta chapter.
