Penny Lapp thought life was done knocking her down, but when the earth shakes the ground beneath her, she knows life isn’t finished toying with her yet. Everyone she has ever cared for is gone. Now suffering from her own accident while being the sole caregiver to her mother, Penny must find a way to survive the storms God has given her. Giving up would be easier, but when a stranger from the north arrives and refuses to leave, she might just discover she has so much to fight for.
Luke Milford came to Kentucky months ago for his cousin’s funeral. Helping his family with their mounting losses, Luke finds himself drawn to his cousin’s intended. He has never met anyone so fragile, so in need…of him. Penny Lapp needs more than a new roof, and Luke is determined to give her that before he must head back home. What was meant to be simply repaying an old debt for saving his life years ago, has now brought him back to claim what captured his heart.
This story brought tears initially due to
the tragedy that happened in Miller Creek in the opening pages. However, there
are plenty of hilarious, joyful, mournful, and uplifting events that filled the
pages of this latest release from Mindy Steele, plus budding romances and
showing that God can take broken dreams and make them into something beautiful
just like a worm will eventually be a beautiful butterfly.
Penny Lapp was seen as a pitiful individual
but in actuality she had compassion, was dedicated to her work and strive to do
all she could for others. The tragedy brought great pain that no one knew or
could understand, until Luke Milford arrived from Michigan to assist his aunt
and uncle. Luke was strong and determined to provide the help needed to his
family as well as to his cousin’s intended. There are plenty of ups and downs,
unexpected twists in the story where I wanted to shake some of the characters
to be nice and honest instead of showing jealousy and gossiping. Hazel and
Rose, who owned the bakery, brought plenty of smiles and laughter with their
matchmaking especially when the Milford family moved to Miller Creek with 6
sons and other families that came looking for a new start with grieving ladies
and their families. This is the second book in Steele’s Miller Creek series but
it can be read as a standalone.
I received a complimentary copy of this
book from the author without being required to write a positive review. I have
shared my own opinion.
