Title: THE HOPE OF REFUGE
Author: Cindy Woodsmall
Publisher: WaterBrook Press
August 2009
ISBN: 978-1-4000-7396-2
Genre: Inspirational/Amish

Cara Moore hasn’t had what would be considered a secure life. After her mother died, her father abandoned her, and left her to be raised in a series of foster homes. Now, Cara is grown, but her husband died prematurely, leaving her a single mother. But Cara is forced to move from apartment to apartment when a relentless stalker starts threatening her.

When Cara’s only friend turns her back on Cara, Cara has no choice but to grab her daughter and run. Finding an address for Dry Lake, Pennsylvania, Cara goes to Amish country. But even the Amish seem to treat her with distrust.

Ephraim Mast is certain he’s seen the strange woman before, and when recognition dawns, he’s the one who knows all the long-held secrets about her family history. A history with the power to destroy the home and stable life that Cara desperately longs to create.

THE HOPE OF REFUGE is another winner by talented author Cindy Woodsmall. The first book in Ms. Woodsmall’s new Ada’s House Series, this will not disappoint. The characters are realistically developed, and I couldn’t help but feel for Cara as she took her young daughter and fled. I also had to admire the little girl’s pluck. I hoped that the pair would find a safe future in Amish country.

There are two stories intertwined in this book, and readers will not only hold their breath over some of the events in Cara’s life, but also in Ephraim’s sister, Deborah’s life. I enjoyed reading THE HOPE OF REFUGE and am going to look for one of Ms. Woodsmall’s books that I didn’t have the luxury of reading yet. I look forward to the other books in this series. An Amish vocabulary guide is included at the end of the book. $13.99. 336 pages.
