A poignant and relatable novel, Looking Glass Lies captures the war women wage against themselves, and the struggle to see beauty reflected in a mirror not distorted by society’s unrelenting expectations.
For most of her adult life, Cecily Ross has compared herself to other women—and come up short. After a painful divorce from her emotionally abusive husband, Cecily returns to her hometown of Canyon, Texas, looking to heal.
But coming home isn’t what she expects. In a town as small as Canyon, her pain is difficult to escape—especially with her model-perfect ex–sister-in-law working at the town’s popular coffee-shop hangout. With help from her father, a support group, and an old friend who guides her to see her own strengths, Cecily may have a shot at overcoming her insecurities and learning to love again.
The true test comes when tragedy strikes, opening Cecily’s eyes to the harmfulness of her distorted views on beauty—and giving her the perfect opportunity to find peace at last.

My thoughts: First, the disclaimer. "I was provided a free copy of this book. All opinions are my own." That done, LOOKING GLASS LIES is Ms. Denman's most recent novel. A women's fiction, there is a hint of a romance in it, but it is mostly one woman's journey of discovering herself after believing the lies for so long. Lies force fed to her by her emotionally abusive husband -- and wow, I cannot believe she put up with what he did!

Most all of us know that sex sells. And that you can't go anywhere without being hit upside the head with it. That little teenager in the line ahead of you at McDonalds, wearing a super-short miniskirt and a tank top that left nothing to the imagination was sending a message loud and clear to the teenage boys behind her in line. Even to the grown men who were there. It wasn't a good message. And it spoke volumes about her self-esteem. Off-the-charts-low.

The married women who discover after the marriage that their husband is addicted to porn? And now the woman compare themselves -- unfavorably -- to every Barbie doll woman out there.  And oh, yeah. That hurts.

Or even worse, the women lose themselves in the emotional abuse. The happy, bright, artistically creative girl becomes dark, gloomy and unhappy.  A mere shadow of their former self. Most of us have been there in some way.

LOOKING GLASS LIES  needs to be required reading for every female out there. Married or unmarried.

Several lines are coming to me right now. This above all, to thine own self be true. Do something that makes you happy. Find yourself.

And read LOOKING GLASS LIES. You will relate in some way to one of the women in this book. And maybe you'll learn something, too. About yourself. Or maybe about someone else...
