A Visit with Shelley Shepard Gray about her new #Christmas book Christmas at the Amish Market

Christmas at the Amish Market

Tell us about the book:

Christmas at the Amish Market is a sweet Amish holiday romance featuring two mismatched couples. The primary hero is Wesley, an overworked manager of a bustling market and gift shop in the heart of Amish country. His father, who owns the store, had a health scare and took some time off, leaving Wesley essentially on his own. When his girlfriend Liesl gets frustrated by his lack of attention and time, she takes it upon herself to volunteer her aunt Jenny to help Wesley for the store’s Christmas rush. Wesley agrees, then is shocked to discover that Jenny is his own age. One thing leads to another and eventually the four central characters learn a lot about love, friendship, and heartache all while being reminded of the true reason for the season.

I have to admit that it’s one of the happiest, joyful Amish books I’ve ever written. I’m excited about this title with Hallmark.

How did your interest in writing originate?

Although I’ve always loved to think up stories, my interest in writing stemmed from my love of reading. One day, after forgetting a book to read during my lunch break at work, I decided to start writing my own book. Obviously, I had a lot to learn, but the experience made me happy so I embraced it. I was sure I would simply have files of made up stories for my eyes only.

What does your writing process look like?

My novels are character based, so I concentrate on my hero and heroine first. I usually start with a couple of paragraphs, write about a hundred pages, then start digging in with a more defined characters and map out the rest of the novel. I usually rewrite a book several times before I turn it into my editor.

If you could cast your characters in the Hollywood adaptation of your book, who would

play your characters? Boy, I’m the worst at these questions because I just don’t watch a lot of television or movies. I’m afraid I have no idea.

Who was your favorite character in Christmas at the Amish Market

My favorite character was Liesl, who at first was my least favorite! I really loved her because she was always underestimated. She had a really good heart and was a hard worker and loved children. I loved going through the manuscript again and again, adding little bits of information. Honestly, by the time I finished the novel she felt very real to me!

What are you working on now? What is your next project?

I have a bad habit of always writing more than one book at a time. So, I’m currently working on Her Secret Hope, a novel set in Pinecraft, Florida that will be published next fall, and Amish Cinderella,  a book set in Apple Creek, Ohio that will also debut sometime next fall.
