Where the Trail Ends / Queen of the Waves and giveaway

Title: WHERE THE TRAIL ENDS
Author: Melanie Dobson
Publisher: Summerside Press
October 2012
ISBN: 978-1609366858
Genre: Historical/Oregon Trail

Samantha Waldron, her brother and father are on the Oregon Trail with a wagon train of other hopeful settlers of the west. Samantha plans to marry handsome Jack at the trails end, with her father’s blessing. But their wagon master doesn’t seem to know what he’s doing or where he’s going, relying on tales from trappers, and putting them in danger.

Alexander Clarke is in the Oregon Territory to learn the Hudson Bay business from bottom to top, then he plans to go back to England and take his rightful place as Lord. But the Americans keep coming west, walking over the mountains after losing their wagons full of belongings. And the director of the business is being too friendly to the settlers, helping them get on their feet instead of thinking of the bottom line.

When Samantha’s brother goes missing in the mountains, Samantha desperately searches for him, with the help of the one man she loves. Will she find her brother alive? And will she marry the man she wants?

WHERE THE TRAIL ENDS is a historical story that doesn’t gloss over the trials of the Oregon Trail as so many other books set on that treacherous journey do. Real life is involved, with illness, death, disease, loss of wagons and livestock, unreasonable rules, and danger from either man or beast.

I really appreciated this story, the faith as they went through trials, and the history of our country that was so seamlessly woven in. History bluffs and historical romance fans will want to read WHERE THE TRAIL ENDS. There is also included a long section of notes from the author that were quite fascinating. Recommended. $12.99. 336 pages.

About the Book:

A young woman traveling the Oregon Trail in 1842 must rely on a stranger to bring her to safety. But whom can she trust with her heart?
For two thousand miles along the trail to Oregon Country, Samantha Waldron and her family must overcome tremendous challenges to reach the Willamette Valley before winter. Together they weather autumn storms, hunger and thirst, and the dangers of a wild and unfamiliar country. But when their canoe capsizes on the Columbia River, they must rely on handsome British exporter Alexander Clarke to rescue them from the icy water.
Alex escorts Samantha and her young brother, Micah, to Fort Vancouver. There Samantha is overwhelmed with men vying for her affections, but the only one who intrigues her-Alex-is the one she cannot have. When his betrothed arrives unexpectedly from England to escort him home, Samantha becomes determined to create a home for herself and Micah in the fertile valley far away from the fort. But how will an unmarried woman support herself and her brother in the wilderness alone?

Then Micah disappears into the wilderness one rainy night, and Samantha must rely on the man she loves-the man she’s trying desperately to forget-to rescue her brother before it’s too late.

Title: QUEEN OF THE WAVES
Author: Janice Thompson
Publisher: Summerside Press
October 2012
ISBN: 978-1609366865
Genre: Historical/Titanic

Jacqueline Abington’s father plans to force her into marriage with a man twelve years her senior. Jacqui is devastated, since she’s secretly in love with the gardener. Jacqui is pleased when her mother arranges voyage for her on the much anticipated maiden voyage of the Titanic to escape her fate.  Yet, things change, and Jacqui comes up with her own plans for escape.

Tessa Bower is poor, and she’s been granted the opportunity of a lifetime—a ticket to America aboard the famed ship. But—in order to claim this opportunity, she must assume Jacqui’s identity. She’ll get to live in luxurious quarters, dress in elegant gowns and dine with prestigious people.

But then tragedy strikes, the game is up, and two women’s lives are changed forever.

QUEEN OF THE WAVES is another story based on the Titanic, since we’ve been “celebrating” the anniversary of it with innumerable movies and books. Some have been quite fascinating, including QUEEN OF THE WAVES. Its a tale involving two women, one who survived the sinking ship, and one who avoided the tragedy only to find another.

QUEEN OF THE WAVES is not a story that ended exactly happily, but a true happy-ever-after story would’ve been untrue to this story line. The writing is impeccable. The plot interesting. My heart broke for someone in this story, but I won’t say who. And if you like historical fiction, the Titanic, and a great read, then QUEEN OF THE WAVES delivers. $12.99. 336 pages.
