Cassandra Higgins is not exactly having a good week. She’s broiled a pan of cookies, turning them into a charred mess, and setting off the smoke alarm in the house, and knocked her toothbrush into the toilet. She ran a pair of red socks through with a load of white clothes. She broke her favorite mug. And she ran over her son’s favorite toy. When Cassandra’s friend called to cancel their annual trek to a Collector’s Convention, its just the last straw. At least until Cassandra’s husband suggests she go alone.

Even though Cassandra hated to go alone, she did, though she did miss out on the free cup of coffee they give to the first one hundred people through the gates. Still, Cassandra buys her own coffee, then turns the opposite direction from the usual way, where she discovers this amazing antique snowglobe—one with a little girl and three dogs. Charmed by the beautiful globe, Cassandra immediately purchases it, but almost instantly, it seems she is forced to deal with long-dormant memories and unfulfilled dreams, and soon she is swirled into a tumultuous journey…

STRAY AFFECTIONS is a book in Ms. Baumbich’s new series, A Snowglobe Connections. The book is more told than shown, so I really couldn’t connect well with the character. I also found the story rather disjointed and sometimes I had to go back and read things twice.

Still, STRAY AFFECTIONS was a delightful tale dealing with difficult relationships, and the need to forgive those that you love. This book will show you the power and the magic of second chances and unconditional love. Some recipes and a reader’s guide are included at the end of the book. The book does have a satisfying conclusion. $13.99. 303 pages.

Summary

In Stray Affections, the last thing that Cassandra expects out of her Sunday is to be mesmerized at a collectors’ convention by a snowglobe. She’s enjoying some shopping time, with husband Ken at home tending their brood of four young boys, when she’s utterly charmed by the one-of-a kind globe containing figures of three dogs and a little girl with hair the color of her own. She can’t resist taking the unique globe home—even if means wrestling another shopper for it!

The beautiful snowglobe sparks long-dormant memories for Cassie, of her beloved Grandpa Wonky, the stray she rescued as a child and the painful roots of her combative relationship with her mother, “Bad Betty” Kamrowski. Life in Wanonishaw , Minnesota is never dull, though, and Cassie keeps the recollections at bay, busy balancing her boys, her home daycare operation, and being a good friend to best pal Margret. But after a strange—flurrious, as Cassie deems it—moment happens with the remarkable snowglobe, Cassie and the people she loves are swirled into a tumultuous, yet grace-filled, and life-changing journey.

“As a believer, I know the power of forgiveness and new beginnings, and of a God, and family and friends, who love me the way I am,” Charlene Ann Baumbich says. “The heartbeat of change flows through those wonderful gifts.”

With the quirky, close-knit Midwestern small-town feel that made Charlene Ann Baumbich’s acclaimed Dearest Dorothy novels so popular, Stray Affections invites readers to experience the laughter and the healing of second chances.
