Austin is struggling to keep his family together since his father abandoned them. His mother is working long hours, and crying herself to sleep at night, so the weight of the family (which includes his nine-year-old sister, Zoe) is falling on Austin’s shoulders. Left in charge of feeding his sister, he takes Zoe and goes to his best friend’s, Daniel’s house. Daniel’s mother willingly feeds Austin and Zoe, then Austin and Daniel go to play computer games.

When a mysterious visitor suddenly appears in Daniel’s room, the boys are startled. But they are even more stunned with this visitor, Samala, claiming to be a messenger for The Holy One, transports the boys on a journey to another dimension, an alternative universe.

Suddenly, Austin and Daniel find themselves attempting to save a strange new world as well as their own, or die in the attempt. With only a small stone and an ancient book for weapons, the boys must face a terrible beast as well as a sinister evil…

DIMENSIONS is written by one of the 2007 Tweener Time Competition Winners, Estee Wells, a homeschooler who was 14 when she wrote this book. For a beginner, this book is amazingly well done. The cover picture was designed by another homeschool student, 16 year old Brie Jenkins. I am not a huge fan of fantasy, but I couldn’t help but be intrigued by this story line and the characters.

Even though boys are the main characters in this story, eight to twelve year old girls will also find the story appealing, especially if they like sci fi or fantasy. My daughter wasn’t real impressed with the book, but this is not her favorite genre either. If your favorite tweener likes sci fi or fantasy then you will want to pick up DIMENSIONS for them to read. It’s a great family book with excellent values. $10.95. 100 pages.
