Annie Beiler has always known she was different, but she didn’t know why until one day she and her sister were going through their chests in the attic. While looking through her family Bible, Annie notices that her birthday is missing. Only the month and the year of her birth are recorded. Annie is curious why and goes downstairs to ask her mamm. There her parents tell her the truth—that she was discovered in the cornfield in the wee hours of the morning, and the midwife was called.

The truth makes Annie feel even more unsettled. She’s been promised in marriage to John Yoder, a man who’s been her best friend since birth. But she doesn’t want to feel pressured into marriage. She wants it to be her choice, not an arrangement. And Annie has even more questions about who she would be if she’d been raised by her birthmother. Would she be an actress? Or something else?

Desperate for answers, Annie begins to search for answers. But will this search draw her away from the community where she was loved and raised? Or will it be the balm her hurting heart is seeking?

ANNIE’S TRUTH is the first book I’ve read by Ms. Shriver, but it certainly won’t be the last. I was instantly drawn into the story by Ms. Shriver’s descriptive writing style, making me care for the characters and want the best for them.

ANNIE’S TRUTH is filled with vivid characters, tender moments, and a theme that is sure to resound with those searching for their place in life. This is a wonderful and touching story, and one that Amish fans will not be able to put down. Highly recommended! $13.99. 304 pages.
