Interview with Susette Williams and free copies of Falling in Love

Why do you write the kind of books you do?

I love to entertain people and want to write books that even teenagers can read. I once read a book that I would have loved to have recommended to others or let my daughters read, but there was a questionable scene in the story. I threw the book away and never told anyone the title even. To me, that's a shame. The author did such a wonderful job of making me feel embarrassed for her heroine, so much so, that I could barely read on. It inspired me write a zany character that my readers would enjoy; and let their daughters read the book, too! The name of my book is Deadly Business and is the first book in the Maid for Murder trilogy. It will be releasing late September or early October of this year.

Besides when you came to know the Lord, what is the happiest day in your life?

Getting married, the birth of our six children would also be right up there with the best day(s) of my life.

How has being published changed your life?

It has given me affirmation and I'm happy that I can now share my stories with others. I love to entertain people and make them laugh.

What are you reading right now?

Right now, the only thing I am reading is one of my critique partners stories.

What is your current work in progress?

I have two projects I am currently working on, hoping to release both of them either this month or the beginning of next month. Winter Chill is the second novella in Seasons of the Heart collection. And, Deadly Business is a humorous mystery that will be the first book in the Maid for Murder trilogy.

What would be your dream vacation?

My dream vacation is to go on vacation with all six of our children and our three older children's spouses. One last family vacation before we start having grandchildren and it makes it even harder for us to all get together or go on vacation together. We haven't gone on vacation with all six children in over ten years.

How do you choose your settings for each book?

A lot of the time I choose my home state of Missouri. I do have a Quaker novella in The Quakers of New Garden and it is set in Indiana.

If you could spend an evening with one person who is currently alive, who would it be and why?

maybe Sandra Bullock, to talk about her being a sweet person and not needing people's approval felt bad after her break up

What are your hobbies, besides writing and reading?

Scrap booking and sewing.

What is your most difficult writing obstacle, and how do you overcome it?

Discouragement. Some days it can be hard. But when someone reads one of your stories and encourages you, it inspires you to want to write more. Unfortunately, as a writer, I thrive on affirmation. I want to please people and entertain them with my stories.

What advice would you give to a beginning author?

Research the market. Decide if what you write is what publishers 'think' is 'hot' right now and if you will be able to sell your book to a traditional publisher. If the answer is no, then consider self-publishing. Don't be lured into vanity publishing, where you have to pay someone else to publish your book. I have seen a lot of people do this and it was a total waste of money. Most of them did not make back their initial investment. Research the best way to market your work. Whether you are published through a traditional publisher, or publish yourself, you will have to market your own books.

Falling in Love

Katie Morgan has her future planned. It doesn’t include becoming serious about anyone before she achieves her goals, not even her handsome boss. Just because she does not have time to date, doesn’t mean her boss shouldn’t. Her new mission…to make her boss happy, whether or not he wants to be.

Wade McAlester fell in love with Katie the first day she walked into his clinic looking for a job. He hired her, content to settle for friendship until she lives out her dream of becoming a vet. Against his better judgment, Wade allows her to fix him up with a couple of her friends. The dates are disastrous. He can’t believe the kind of women Katie seems to think he’d enjoy spending his life with. However, when Wade’s old colleague, Dr. Laura Redmond shows up, Katie is rethinking how happy she wants her boss to be, and with whom. Definitely not the gorgeous doctor.

What do you want readers to take away from the book?

Each story in this series shows a different side of love. From the collection, I hope readers will see sometimes you have young, innocent love, and sometimes you have obstacles that you have to overcome to find true love. In Falling in Love, Katie faces falling in love with her boss. In Winter Chill, Sasha must deal with a bad experience in order to move on in her life and trust again. In Spring Break, Kelly's hero has to determine whether or he loves her enough, in spite of her infertility. In Heated Summer, Margaret comes off as a gold-digger, but what really lies beneath the surface? I believe readers will come away feeling refreshed and encouraged when they read Seasons of the Heart.
