The Inheritance

Title: THE INHERITANCE
Author: Tamera Alexander
Publisher: Thomas Nelson
March 2009
ISBN: 978-1-59554-632-6
Genre: Inspirational/historical

McKenna Ashford is hoping for a new beginning. Her younger brother, Robert, has gotten into all kinds of trouble back home, and now, McKenna is hoping that they can begin again in Colorado. She accepts her cousin’s invitation to come west, and with all her leather saddle making equipment in tow, McKenna and Robert begin the long trip west.

But their arrival in Copper Creek isn’t exactly what McKenna hoped. Almost run down by a convict, McKenna soon finds herself stitching a man in the absence of a doctor. And when she finally makes it to her cousins ranch, she discovers an unpleasant shock.

U.S. Marshal Wyatt Caradon is dedicated to capturing criminals. When he happens to meet McKenna, he finds himself running into the past he wanted to forget—and a woman who makes him dream of a future.

THE INHERITANCE is a strong historical story about starting over. I couldn’t help but feel for McKenna as she struggled with feelings of inadequacy after possibly failing her younger brother, and then as she faces having to raise another child, she doesn’t feel up to the task. Wyatt is a dear hero, who, despite having spent years on the trail chasing down “bad guys”, is still a sweetheart, willing to go above and beyond the call of duty. I couldn’t help but fall in love with Wyatt.

Rich in description, Ms. Alexander can make you hear the sound of footfalls on the boardwalk, smell the horses, and see the scenery. You will live out THE INHERITANCE right along with the characters. An author’s note (which is heart-rending) and discussion questions are included at the end of the book. $14.99. 374 pages.

I received this book from the author for purpose of review.
